A private tour means that everything can be customized to your needs and desires. Sightseeing schedule, attractions, departure time, time spent at a particular location … it’s all a matter of your desires and expectations. However, one of our ideas is as follows:
1Among many interesting locations and villages, which you can experience on the way to Dubrovnik, you can also find some of our ideas and suggestions below here. Since we need to pay attention to the distance in order to get to Dubrovnik, there won´t be enough time to visit all of them in one day. Think about what appeals you the most and we can arrange a tour according to your highlights.
2On our way to Dubrovnik, our first suggestion is an interesting small village called Ston located on the Pelješac peninsula.
It is famous for salt-works since the Roman times, even 2000 years BC.
This makes Ston one of the oldest salt-works in Europe and the largest preserved in the history of the Mediterranean.
Even today the salt is produced in the same way, using sea, sun and wind. What impresses the most are the Ston walls and fortifications above the old town connecting two sides of the surrounding hill.
The fortifications reinforced with about 40 towers and 5 fortresses are built in the 14th and 15th centuries, modeled the same way as Dubrovnik.
3Another visiting suggestion is Trsteno. Twenty kilometers away from Dubrovnik, there is Trsteno, a small coastal village known for its rich natural beauties and the 500-year-old giant natural monuments – Asian plane-trees.
It is the oldest arboretum in this part of the world. In 15th century the arboretum was erected by the local noble family Gozze (Gučetić), who requested ship captains to bring back seeds and plants from their voyages.
Even today, you can explore The Gozze family renaissance summer residence with its garden cultivated from the 15th century to the present days. Nowadays, there are 465 cultivated and 510 wild plant species.
A 15th century aqueduct and a baroque fountain with the Roman god Neptune leave everyone speechless.
4About an hour driving from Ston or twenty minutes from arboretum, we arrive to Dubrovnik.
Even on the entrance of the city, you will understand why Dubrovnik is one of the most popular tourist and historical destinations on the Adriatic.
All around the town you can find admirable old-fashion restored villas fitted and hidden in centuries-old greenery.
The town is full of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings and structures, such as churches, building, monasteries, palaces and fountains.
5The history of Dubrovnik dates back to the 6th century, when it was named Ragusium, before receiving its Croatian name Dubrovnik in the 12th century.
During its history, Dubrovnik was a strong maritime town and important trade and shipbuilding center which is the reason why it became the Republic of Dubrovnik in the 16th century.
It was a strong rival of the Venetian Republic. In 1979 Dubrovnik was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Now, you have the opportunity to witness the heritage which was established by the invincible people of Dubrovnik.
Be sure to visit:
• 2 kilometers of town walls with 3 forts, 16 towers, 6 bastions etc.
• Fort Lovrijenac situated on a 37-meter-high cliff
• Revelin – the large irregular square – shaped fort, built in the 16th century due to the defense of Venice.
• Stradun – the main pedestrian street with Onofrio’s Fountain and Orlando´s Column
• Sponza Palace – the ancient customs office, the state mint and treasury built in Gothic-Renaissance style
• Rector´s Palace
• Baroque church of St. Blaise, the heavenly patron saint of the city
…and other countless things…
